Pink & Orange Birthday Cake with Ribbon Roses

Sometimes, if I'm lucky and we get our cakes done early, I get to be creative and decorate more dummy cakes for the show room! A couple of weeks ago, I created this one:

The whole cake was decorated in hot pink and bright orange. However, if you come to the bakery now, the colors will look very faded. Has anyone come up with a good way to protect dummy cakes from fading due to light and sun exposure? If so, please share!

I really enjoy decorating dummy cakes because I get to do whatever I want. I choose the colors. I choose the design. I can even choose the name I put on the cake! The day I made this cake, Emma was my favorite.

I am also a huge fan of ribbon roses. They're easy and fast to make, they're a little whimsical, and they're sweet. I'll post a ribbon rose tutorial on here soon. If you've never made them before, you'll love them!

This is my kind of cake. Just looking at it makes me smile.

What does your kind of cake look like?*

What a fun cake! I have yet to make ribbon roses yet but they do look like they'd be pretty simple to make.

I am definitely a loyal reader - I love your blog!

I go between two types of cake - sophisticated & playful. I actually love both cakes on your previous post http://melcakewalk.blogspot.com/2010/02/2010-central-florida-fair.html. Both of my styles in one post!

That dummy cake is sooo cute!!! My kind of cake is anything that has chocolate in it! ;) Try Minwax Polycrylic, that might keep the colors from fading.

What a fun design! I totally love it!
My kind of cake is anything with polka dots or stripes -- and chic black and white cakes can never be beat :)

I love the colors on this cake - so fun!

As for my kind of cake... I've been drooling over pretty much all of your creations. I like the story-themed ones best, I think, like your Shrek/Fiona wedding cake.

It would have to be pure white with yellow calla lilies. Or any cake that you make!

I am not sure what my kind of cake would be. It varies depending on my mood.

I have seen a few cakes online that include rubber duckies :) I think they are amazingly cute, and want to make one myself someday.

my kind of cake is dense chocolate with no fondant on it... sorry! hate the taste. fine! i'll go fondant on it as long as i get a double layer of buttercream... and i don't care about the design - i just love cake!

Mmy favorite kind of cake is a cake that fits the person it is made for. For example for my daughter, her middle name is Rose and we use her first name and Rose when we are talking to her and about her so her birthday cake had to have lots of pink and Roses of course. Her brother loves the Gators so his cake last cake was a football cake but but he wants a Gator this year. So we will see what Amber comes up with. My favorite taste in cakes however, is always any flavor with homemade buttercream icing, the thicker the better. Love your blog.

My kind of cake would be anything that you make. You seem to always come up with really neat ideas that I've never seen anywhere else before. Would love a yellow cake with some kind of caramel filling. Growing up my favorite cakes at the family reunions were the yellow cake with homemade caramel icing. Yummy!!

My kind of cake is simple but with really amazing accents. Like gumpaste flowers that no one believes are edible. And I like really BOLD colour, but only one at a time.
